April 30, 2012

Dear Parents,
    
     MAPs testing this week.  Reading = Monday @ 10:30
                                            Math = Tuesday @ 8:05

    This is our final MAPs test this year!  I anticipate seeing great scores!!!

THIS WEEK IN OUR CLASSROOM:

SPELLING:  Lesson 30

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Persuasive Writing!  Our first writing prompt will be about school uniforms.

SCOOPer READING:  May 14th is approaching......

READING:  The students will be reading a fantasy novel and be given Book Club discussion sheets to be completed in time for their book club meeting.  They will also be given a participation grade.
The first book club meeting = Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Chapter 10 Lesson 3 "Ratifying the Constitution"
Your child has an opportunity to memorize the preamble to the Constitution "We the People" and perform in front of the class.  This will earn your child 2 Bonus Points in social studies and earn a prize!!

SCIENCE:  Chapter 5 Test = Thursday.

MATH:  Time and Temperature!!

Dear Parents,

   A huge thank you to Mrs. Dziedzic and Mrs. Hoffman for picking up and paying for our classroom pictures that will be used for our Memory Books.  A huge thank you to Mrs. Gustafson for the generous donation of  the DRAGONBREATH series.  Our classroom has all 7 books!  Thanks to all of you who continually support our classroom is so many ways.

We could use more FRUIT SNACKS!  Thanks in advance!!

Ask your child about the classroom read aloud we just finshed Because of Mr. Terupt.  There is a sequel Mr. Terupt Falls again.  It might be something worth "checking out"!

SCOOPer READING = Due on May 14th!

READING:
 We are finishing our Poetry Unit with learning more about Hyperboles.
 The children have written a Yankee Doodle parody and a cinquain.
 Next, they will write a diamante poem.

LANGUAGE ARTS: 
We will begin learning about the elements of Persuasive text and writing.
 The first writing assignment will be about SCHOOL UNIFORMS.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
 Chapter 9 tests have been graded and returned.
 Chapter 10 Lesson 1 "Forming a Weak Government"
 Chapter 10 Lesson 2 "Debate in Philadelphia"

SCIENCE:
 Chapter 5....  Food Webs and The Energy Pyramid

MATH: 
The Metric System
There will be an assessment at the end of the week -  A QUEST (quiz/test)  !!

The Week of April 16, 2012

Dear Parents,
We are now halfway through our 3rd trimester of 5th grade. If your child has a grade lower than a C a progress report is being sent home. Please review your child's progress at this time using Parent Connect.
It was nice to see many of you at the TGFD (Too Good For Drugs) 5th grade graduation.
Matt did a fabulous job sharing his Promise Letter.
Congratulations to Meghan for winning 1st place in the Citizen's Bank essay contest and to Camille for receiving an honorable mention.
Thank you, Mrs. Peloso for bringing in a special treat for our China unit.

HERE's WHAT's HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOM:

SPELLING: Lesson 28

SCOOPer READING: Due date is May 14th!

READING: We will be looking at how figurative language is used in poetry. This week we will specifically be looking at poetry that uses similes, imagery, onomatopoeia, and personification.
We will also be writing a CINQUAIN and a PARODY to "Yankee Doodle" which correlates with social studies.

ENGLISH: finishing Unit 3 Verbs.....TEST on FRIDAY!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES: We are finished with Chapter 9!
Monday = How to Study sheet and highlighting notes.
Tuesday and Wednesday = review
Thursday = CHAPTER 9 TEST!!!

SCIENCE: Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Plant Structures and Lesson 2 How Energy is Passed through an Ecosystem

MATH: Chapter 22 Measurement
Customary measurements of length, capacity, and weight.

SPELLING: Lesson 27 and our last word of the week!

ENGLISH: Unit 3 Contractions & Irregular Verbs

READING: China Brochures due Monday.
We will be doing some various activities that focus on CHINA.

SCOOPer Reading: Goals are due on May 4th!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Chapter 9 continued..... The students learned what it was like for Washington's soldiers to cross the Delaware River and how important this event was in American history. This week we will be discussing Revolutionary War Uniforms and the final events of the American Revolution.

MATH: Chapter 13 Adding and Subtracting fractions.
*No math Tuesday due to TGFD graduation
